Welcome to the Crystal Forest
The Crystal Forest lies roughly in the middle section of road between the north entrance to the park from Interstate 40, and the south entrance from Highway 180.
Destruction of this area by gem collectors and souvenir hunters forced Arizona citizens to petition the government to preserve these unique Petrified wood exhibits.
Hollows and cracks in the Petrified logs were once home to beautiful Amethyst and
Quartz
gemstones and the relentless raiding of these gems was enough to convince the locals to take positive action.
In this southern part of the park it is estimated that about thirty feet of Petrified wood bearing sediment remains, so just maybe there is more gem encrusted logs yet to be uncovered, only time will tell.
Holbrook is the closest location to find a hotel room near to the Petrified Forest where there is a Holiday Inn but the city of Flagstaff is not too far away and has more amenities if you are visiting other sites nearby.

There is a small easy trail that you can walk here , If you take your time and look carefully some small but lovely Amethyst and Quartz examples can still be found in the many logs that remain here.
This area is the perfect example of why the Park Rangers are so strict on visitors taking even the smallest sample of Petrified wood from its original location.
If this warning does not deter you, then expect a Minimum fine of $275.00 and or arrest.
But this will not apply to you as enjoying the Painted Desert is why you are here.
Quartz... The colour of Quartz without any addition of other minerals is white, tan or grey.
Amethyst Jewelry
because of its affordability has become very popular and is also the birthstone for the month of February.
