Emerald Jewelry and all it's Flaws
To bear a gift of Emerald Jewelry is traditionally offered to celebrate the twentieth and thirty fifth wedding anniversary, Emerald is also the birthstone for the month of may.
This dazzling green stone was mined for thousands of years by the ancient pharoahs with the most famous being Cleopatra who had a vast collection of Emeralds, the Cleopatra mines in Egypt was probably the source of a large amount of historical Emerald but the mines have been depleted for many years now.
At the moment probably the best specimens in the world right now originate from Colombia.
Some cultures believe the jewel has great healing power.
Pure Beryl has no colour it is only through the inclusion of other elements that give the Emerald its wonderful rich green in this case it is Chromium and Vanadium.
Emerald gemstones will usually be found having cracks and fissures which are treated with oil, most commonly cedar oil as it has a similar refractive index and helps to show off and disperse the stones rich vibrant colour.

Because of these cracks and fissures the Emerald is a problem to cut and this unique gemstone even has its own kind of cut called the step or Emerald cut. Usually rectangular with the corners beveled so as to prevent the flaws from splintering the jewel, although the stone is quitehard it prevents accidental damage by chipping the corner of the gem if you were to knock it. Synthetic Emerald has been available for some time but if you are investing your hard earned cash on this superb gemstone you will only buy from a reputable source so this shouldn't really be a problem, the wonderful thing about Emerald is its unique flaws usually give it away. When buying Emerald Jewelry of course it is important to be sensible and go by your budget but the larger the stone you can buy the better the gem will show off its fantastic colour. One word of caution when wearing Emerald never bring the stone into contact with liquid or detergents this will impregnate the fissures which in turn will deteriorate the jewel giving it a dull finish, so dont do the washing up with your Emerald ring on.
